What makes a good parent is someone who WANTS to parent. If they don't even like children or want to have a relationship with their child then the kid will grow up alone, which isn't fair. You also need to have love and support for the child, even as they get into teen and adult years. Children cost a lot of money, so of coruse you're going to need money to raise them. They are not cheap! Thinking that having a baby will bring you and your spouse closer is wrong. In fact, it probably brings you more apart. It involves a lot work and you may not get a lot of time with eachother..so how will that help? In order to have a kid I would think that you should know a littl bit about children. There's information that can be passed down from the family, there's books and there's your own personal knowledge and experience. To know if you're a good parent or not, I would just use you're own judgement, if you feel you're not ready for kids; then don't have them. If you are ready then go ahead. :)
